De-Nesting Diaries: Tuesday, March 5th

Laugh, and the world laughs with you; / Weep, and you weep alone. / For this brave old earth must borrow its mirth, / But has trouble enough of its own.-Ella Wheeler Wilcox, poet (1850-1919)

Sprezzatura:

MEANING:
noun: Doing (or giving the appearance of doing) something effortlessly; effortless grace; nonchalance.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Italian. Earliest documented use: 1957.

P,

a perfect description of you on the bicycle and me on the court.

Great ride lasterday  -- apart from the distasteful tour of outer Rickmund.

You have not reported in with your numbers, therefore the record will only show the paltry 50 kms that were on my odometer.

Friday may be our day?  W
Buon Giorno, Ragazzi!

I see from the caustic tone of your epistle that instead of riding with me to corroborate actual distance covered you would rather mealy-mouth my Herculean efforts in an attempt to undercut what you yourselves are loath to attempt! However, I refuse to stoop to Hungerford-like behaviour so will recount my modest continuance once unceremoniously dumped/deserted at 37th and Cypress. As you both well know, but choose to ignore, I continued out to UBC. Had 48 K on the clock by the time I reached Camosun so knew I was in pretty good shape, given recent ride out to Iona.

Following the same route, (Up/down Camosun, up/down through Wesbrook Village, along MD to ride up 16th to Tolmie and loop back to Blanca, then a short bit around UBC), was able to register 72 K at the bottom of the Forshore Hill. On fire now as the fairly strong wind was behind me, finally, so made for Stanley Park. Enjoyed the Seawall, past the Rowing Club, as I was following a Lycra clad woman who was fussed about all the cyclists coming towards us. I knew that the Seawall was closed for "scaling" past Prospect Point so understood that these riders had no option but to ride clockwise, contrary to posted direction. She insisted on screaming at each and every roller-blader or cyclist, gesticulating angrily with her clenched fist. Of course, these people paid her no never mind. One young woman yelled back "The Seawall is closed, Lady! The Seawall is closed!" I was the only one paying attention to all the palaver and I knew how silly it all was. In fairness, I think there should be notices  posted for the benefit of everyone. Nevertheless, I, for one, was extremely magnanimous, never even looking darkly at all the Wrong-Way-Corrigans, sympathizing with the them and marvelling at all the wasted invective hurled their way.

Must admit that by the time I was climbing the Prospect Hill grade my legs were not as fresh as I'd have liked them to be. Put it down to having to keep up with the Speed Demons on the flats in out to Iona and later in the outreaches of Rickmud during the first part of the ride. Realize that The Terrible Twins have been doing more sprint training on straightaways out to Iona, ever since we left in December, than you reported, because you wanted to punish me for leaving you behind in the wintry clime! (Never realized, until now, why Robo Man has been riding even more "presto or vivace" than normale! Even if I'd brought along my camera, (My new career, sneeringly referred to by Raymondo!), to capture action shots, I 'd have needed an inordinately large telephoto lens to capture but his high fashion-clad rump disappearing over the horizon as he sprezzatura'd away at warp speed!   Furthermore, two long days of kneeling, putting down flooring, took its own particular toll, I'm sure. Nonetheless, I persevered and made it back to Heartbreak Terrace with a grand total of 115.3 K, over 6:06:40, AVG 18.8 KPH, MAX 45.5 KPH. Quite pleased with ride as it is my longest since returning. Lots to do in terms of AVG however. Enjoyed a cup of java with two of Rosita's muffins as my reward, since I was not given the option of any take-away cheesecake!
North Shore mountains looked spectacular today, from both Rickmud, as you know, and along Spanish Banks, which you don't know! Sunday, The Lions were literally framed by Chloƫ's picture window. Not sure I've ever seen them so beautifully snow-capped before. Without exaggerating, stunning!!!

Going over to the Loft for a few hours later this morning.Tina/Trevor, arrive from Sun Peaks, today, at 5:00pm.  They'll be here until late Friday afternoon when they return to Oz. They might enjoy a Seawall jaunt to SP so I'll let you know about a ride once I've had a chance to find out their plans for next few days. Keep up the time trials! Cheers, Il Conduttore! (Now you capice, Giorgio, why I'm referred to by The Sisterhood as "Il Conduttore" the Effortless Consumer of Malt!)

Pic: Lions, yesterday. Unfortunately, not my snap. Dropped my Nikon on #4 Road when I was trying to keep up!

Hi Kerry!

I forgot to thank you, in earlier message, as well for sending along the posting for Chloƫ. Very kind of you to think of her. However, given the fact that she has committed to Aunt Leah's I don't think the Elphinstone job is an option. The fact that she is just moving into the loft is another significant reason to stay in town.

Nevertheless, thanks. I'm replying on her behalf as she is struggling with a nasty cold and is beat after today's time at the loft. Cheers, Patrizzio!
