De-Nesting Diaries: Monday, April 29th

It is often forgotten that (dictionaries) are artificial repositories, put together well after the languages they define. The roots of language are irrational and of a magical nature. -Jorge Luis Borges, writer (1899-1986)

Mojo

MEANING:
noun: Magical power; charm.

ETYMOLOGY:
Apparently of W. African origin, akin to Gullah moco (witchcraft), Fula moco'o (medicine man). Fula is a language of West Africa. Earliest documented use: 1926.

Hi English Chef!

Sorry it has taken me so long to say hello! Are you still in Sint Maarten? Been quite busy ever since returning home on February 17th. Now planning our trip overseas. Before that we'll be flying to LA on May 18th for our youngest grandson's, Alejandro's, graduation from U Cal Northridge on May 22nd. Then back to Vancouver on May 22nd and then to Winnipeg, without Cora Lee, on May 23rd. I will attend the 100th Anniversary of my junior high school, Isaac Brock. Really looking forward to both, as you can imagine. Then back to Vancouver on May 28th in time for Dram Come True, on 31st, a malt tasting fund raiser for the Vancouver Writers Festival. Corinne and I both volunteer
during Festival, in late October. Not much more than a month then and we are off to London on July 10th. If it's Tuesday, it must be York! First stop after London. Then Somerset and then Cornwall, around August 1st. Are you still planning to be there? Let me know. It would be fun to connect. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Beatricce and Patrizzia!

Trust you are both well! Sorry I've not been in touch sooner. No excuses but plenty of reasons. Unfortunately, we simply didn't have time to visit in February, when in LA. Just there for a few days and only zipped through Healdsburg on way north, stopping only at Kokomo and Soda Rock for supplies!

Now planning our next overseas trip. Before that we'll be flying to LA on May 18th for Alejandro's, graduation from U Cal Northridge on May 22nd. (I know it will be a busy time in Tinsel Town but perhaps we could manage a quick visit, somewhere/sometime, depending on everyone's schedule. Let me know what you think, Tricce. Sorry we won't be visiting Sonoma, Patrizia, but we are still keen on doing  a house exchange so think about that possibility.) Not much more than a month then and we are off to London on July 10th. If it's Tuesday, it must be York! First stop after London. Then Somerset and then Cornwall, around August 1st for a house exchange. Ayn hopes to join us there for ten days or so.

A few days ago I had an email from the owner of Beau Soleil, the property in Languedoc I am interested in renting after we leave The Luxury, Sheer Luxury of Cornwall!  I have requested it for the month of September, €1,300 or €400/week, €50/person for Cleaning and Laundry, no matter length of stay. I've attached the rate sheet and brochure to give you some idea of place and environs, and perhaps entice you to join us.

Yesterday afternoon we drove to Wall Street to pick up Chloë and then went to have lunch at a new restaurant, The Meatery, in North Van, Edgemont Village, which her friend Krissy had been hired to open. (Krissy is the daughter of Gaye/Derek, couple in Cornwall we will do house exchange with.) Back to Granville Island, I corresponded with the world while Cora Lee and Chloë and Maggie, (our own Devil Cat!), watched Skyfall. After film was over we strolled to Cat's Social House, just two minutes from us on GI, for a bite to eat. Cora Lee had a Groupon, (An online service offering deals on everything from shopping to travel to dining and more. Probably started in LA. Doesn't everything?), that needed to be used before it expired. Had salads an appetizers as nobody was starving after tasty lunch earlier.

Anyway, let me know about possibilities of seeing you in LA, Beatricce, and/or France, both or either of you. Fondestos to you from Coriandre. Cheers, Patrizzio!

What fun to hear from you Patrick and Corinne!  I was wondering what had happened to you.  You have been very busy I see.  I will be here when you are coming to the LA area. I am free after work or on the weekend so let me know how your plans progress and maybe we can rendez vous. France sounds great but I have a wedding to pay for and think I will be needing to count my pennies, but you never know! Cheers... I have to do payroll now so I have to sign off. Take care!! Trice

Thanks very much for the pictures Patrick. Looked like a pretty delicious lunch. Will look forward to sampling the food and meeting  Umberto. Krissy said he is a very good boss.

Your bear story reminded me when Gayle and I drove from Banff across to Vancouver a few years ago. We stopped at a remote area to have our packed lunch and saw a sign warning of bears. It was a very quick sandwich I can tell you! You are right, no dangerous wild life in Cornwall apart, as you say, the locals. Particularly those that live near Lands End. The film Deliverance comes to mind!

Your new bridge circle sounds like fun, not that I can play the game. I only played it once when I was in my teens. I was staying with my sister and brother in law at the time and his sister was visiting with a couple of friends from Swindon. They sat down and tried to teach me but with little success. Brian's sister kept getting annoyed with me since I consistently played the wrong cards. I was, apparently, supposed to know as her card partner, what her strategy was or something along those lines!

We driving up to London early tomorrow morning and will be back again on Saturday. Will be in touch Best wishes Derek

Hi again, Derek! Glad you enjoyed the snaps. It was a lovely affair. Krissy has obviously done a wonderful job. I do hope that things will eventually work out for the best as both of them are certainly not afraid to work hard.

Had a short 10 K, errand ride this afternoon. Must say I felt pretty good. Much more comfortable. physically and psychologically than last Wednesday so pleased about that. Unbelievably windy coming back from downtown over Burrard Bridge. Really had to concentrate not to be blown sideways gusts were that strong. Had to return to lab for another test and then I made my way back to Kitsilano to the Royal Bank on the corner of 4th and Balsam for a spot of banking. Friendly young woman who served me suggested I upgrade my Visa Gold to Platinum for no annual fee. She obviously knows about my numbered Swiss bank account!

Cora Lee's Book Club is meeting as I scribe so Maggie and I are banished to the bedroom. I'm not at all put out, (Neither is she as she's snuggled up underneath a Mexican blanket at the end of the bed.), as I've loads to do simply re-arranging all the books that can now be placed on the shelves re-patriated from downstairs. Hope to watch Bletchley Circle after The Sisterhood leave as Cora Lee was too tired to do so last night, exhausted by Bond's carrying-ons.

Enjoy London. I gather you will be there for most of the week. Fabulous life indeed. Nice work if you can get it! Picadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, National Gallery, British Museum, Leicester Square and on and on and on! Close friends were in London about a month ago and saw thirteen plays in two weeks! You should be staying close to home, mingling with the Deliverance/Land's End folk, drinking Cornish Scrumpy cider made at Healey's Cider Farm, an easy ride to Redruth from you and learning how to play bridge, not strolling over Tower Bridge! However, I gather you may have felt a tad uncomfortable when last at St Just, not all that far from Sennen and environs. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pat! I'm so sorry! How awful...thank goodness it wasn't worse. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.~Maya

Hi Maya! Thank for get well wishes! Need to make a more than full recovery if I'm to ride in Europe. Fondestos to you from Coriandre. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Some sad news today.

 april 20, 2013
the sun was coming up on a warm spring day when brooks and i took our last walk around the seawall ..  he was tired and did not have much energy but managed to walk a bit and enjoyed the gentle morning breeze blowing the fir on his face..   he had been my pal and buddy for over 18 years, 18 years of constant companionship and love and felt i had done everything i could to prolong his life just another year , month, day and then hours ..  unfortunately there are some things you cannot change and the inevitability of death is one of those things..
we had one last walk, one last hug, one last brush, one last car ride and 18 kisses, one for every year he was alive, but not one last tear..
i feel in my heart i had to let him go, however that does not ease the pain or questions i have as to whether i could have done more.. to the very last, no matter how weak he was, he still managed to get to the litter box to do what he had to do..  i loved Brooks more than i can possibly express in these few words and there will be a huge hole in my heart for quite sometime to come, perhaps forever..
after they gave him the injection he passed away peacefully in my arms, the two of us sat quietly in the room alone for about 15 minutes.  i held him close to my chest and cried because of what i had lost. his little tongue was sticking out ever so slightly and he looked so sweet and finally at rest.

brooks will be cremated and when Brie is back from her trip to mexico we will set him free on the granville island sea wall where he spent the last years of his life enjoying the sites, smells and numerous photos and pats from strangers who just loved to see him walking along beside me on his leash and red collar..
he will be missed by all who met him and loved him. D

Hi Goils!

Always tough to loss a loved pet. Brie's dad wrote a very moving account. Pass along our sad thoughts to both Brie and him. Love Dad/Patrizzio!

i will.give Mags some cuddles for me. xx

D, Mags looks like she lost an eye in a fight and needs a patch!!

Hi Chloë!

Maggs lost out with a raccoon after you left! She'll look pretty dashing with a patch. I'm planning to fix her a small crutch as well, just like Long John Silver! Love, Dad!
she didn't really did she???

Hi Chloë and Ayn!

While Nana was watching the end of Skyfall last night she let Maggster out as she was yowling. Next thing she knew she heard all this hissing and growling and when she went to the window she saw that two large racoons had cornered Maggie near the bbq. She started screaming, took hold of a mop handle and rushed at the fairly large raccoons, trying to beat them off.

Maggs' Look Alike!

One left immediately, but the other, the larger one, reared up and somehow managed to scratch your Mother on her leg, ripping her jeans and drawing blood. She fainted and cracked her head on the sharp edge of the bbq. The raccoon took all her rings and watch and ambled off into the night.

By the time I was able to reach the patio, Maggs had lost an eye and her right front paw and Nana was convulsing. Blood everywhere. I had flashbacks to my bike accident and I nearly passed out myself. Luckily I was able to call 911 and when the paramedics finally arrived they suspected that the raccoon was probably rabid, hence the convulsions. They asked if your Mom had a will as they feared for her life. I said I'd look for it after I finished my latest blog entry as it was such a good story I wanted it to go virile. Still haven't heard back from VGH but then again, Nana never answers her cell, even if she has it with her!

If she doesn't pull through, I'm planning to bury her with Annie's ashes when I go to Winnipeg in May. Love, Dad! PS: Maggs seems to be doing quite well with the crutch. She's learned how to poke Molly Mop in the eye with it when she comes upstairs with Flamin' and tries to eat her food. Silver lining in every cloud!

Your terrible!!! xx                                                                                                        Hi again, Ms Gullible!

YOUR grammar is terrible! Please note correct form:"You're, (you are), terrible!", and pay €50 fine to the numbered Swiss bank account of The Grammar Polizei!!! Need it as just learned the following, (See below)

Otherwise your 2012 Income Tax Return will not be filed on time and Feds will be knocking on your loft door. AND Maggie will lose her other hind leg. Won't need a crutch then but rather a small-wheeled dolly. Maybe you should ask your grandfather to start working on the design! Cheers, Loan Shark Department, Islay Inn! PS: Please tack on an additional €20 for purloined groceries! PPS: Glad you took the arsenic laced Feta! Nana intended it for me!

Ayn P shared a link.
Patrick James Dunn Nana has her first shift there this coming Thursday. An employee, named Chloë, left a very pleasant phone message, thanking Corinne for volunteering!

Hi Patrick

Beau Soleil is yours for September and please fill her with as many guests as you want (she sleeps 10 comfortably).  The beginning of August would be great for the deposit.  We will have literally just returned ourselves.  As we only lend our home to friends, and friends of friends, we will take cash (Euros) only.  The balance can be paid to our management company; you can also calculate how many visitors at the end of your stay and factor the cleaning fee into the balance owing to the management company - Niall and Trudi are marvellous. Best Simon

Hello Simon!

Grand news indeed! Thanks very much, again, for quick reply and confirmation. Simply delighted to have the opportunity to stay. Since we will be in England in August, I'm wondering if it is possible to pay the deposit ahead of time, here in Vancouver, sometime before July 10th, day we fly to London. If this is possible would you still want Euros or Canadian dollars, perhaps? Either is fine, from our point of view, of course, so just let me know. Thanks again. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi, good point.  I had no trouble at all on the Coke, glad I didn't wait until this morning to drive back.  All is well home safe and sound.  Good info on the movie, did they enjoy it? Cheers for now, book club tonight!!
Joanne.

Hi Cokester! Glad all went well with your weekend travel. Coquihalla can be something anytime of year, it seems! The Goils both enjoyed show immensely, not only for music but also for the racial/social issues it deals with. If the discussion at Book Club flags tonight, come and rub shoulders with me in the bedroom and I'll see if I can find something more stimulating to chat about! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Dennisovitch!

Just received the following message from Simon. (See above)
Very pleased indeed to be able to stay so thanks so much for alerting me in the first instance and providing all the contact details. I have some materials from the Oasis Program so whenever you are free and/or interested you could pop by and we can chat over malt, both about hips and Beau Soleil. Thanks again,Cheers, Patrizzio!
