De-Nesting Diaries: Wednesday, April 17th

Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on "I am not too sure." -H.L. Mencken, writer, editor, and critic (1880-1956)

Ray,

no word from Pat later last night. I will call him mid morning in case he is sleeping off the knock on his coconut. G

P, hope you are feeling better I am At Firehall 19 right now and nobody is home. Will wait a few minutes and if they don't show - will return later. Likely around 3:00 when I get the MT. Will call ya to check on your condition, shortly. W

P, TREK is at West Point

a cursory look at your bike by me and WP staff indicates that there was very little if any damage. Nothing obvious. The mechanics will inspect it more closely.

They are expecting a call form you (224 3536) to advise them on what work you want done. The bike is not booked in to a time slot but they were hoping to fit it between other project depending on what needs work and how soon it is required. Your work tag number is 990459.

I took your water bottle to protect any unsuspecting tippler from the toxic contents. I foolishly dumped it out on the grass and the lawn is not looking well. W

Hi Skip/Sarge!

Under other circumstances, I'd have loved to play this coming Thursday. However, I'm having difficulty just walking at the moment and I really cannot see myself sweeping tomorrow. Offer much appreciated, however! Whirlygig  picked up my bike at #19 Firehall, (Trimble and 12th, this morning.), doesn't appear to have sustained any significant damage.  Come up when you have a minute and we can talk about Friday with Rosemary and Andre. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Big Al!

Looking forward to exploring cycling venues around your cabin. Sounds exciting indeed. Let me know if your friend wants a ticket to Dram as I'm ordering them through Paul Whitney. He is on the Board of VWF and he is in a competition with other board members so he asked me if I'd purchase ones I want through him. Not a big deal but if it works I know he'd be grateful.

On a slightly darker note, however, I suffered "another" bike accident yesterday afternoon. Fortunately, nothing too, too serious. As you will soon tell, I'm more worried about my carbon fibre than my noggin! Anyway, I'm alive and so, so well. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Barbara Hale/Della Street!
Hi Kimbo!

Sorry that it has taken me so long to respond. Been busy here, for a number of reasons. Both Cora Lee and I are taking a look at your material and should have some suggestions by week's end or sooner. Hello and best wishes to one and all. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Janet!

What a remarkable coincidence that you know Andre and Rosemary. I'll be sure t mention it to them when they come for dinner this coming Friday. I gather that Andre's heart condition is under control at the moment but understand this is one of the reasons he returns too Canada regularly. Too see his cardiac specialist.

Sorry that it has taken me so long to respond. Been busy here, for a number of reasons. Painting in the spare room, for one, but on a slightly darker note, however, I suffered "another" bike accident yesterday afternoon. Fortunately, nothing too, too serious. As you will soon tell, I'm more worried about my carbon fibre than my noggin! Anyway, I'm alive and so, so fine! Monday is still on. Nothing will stop us from seeing your pictures! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Ann Margaret!

Wonderful to see you last Saturday. Sorry that it has taken me so long to send along some snaps. Perhaps it was your fault, by association! Enjoy the  rest of your sojourn. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Sylvia and Ray!

Thanks again, Sylvia, for your help in alerting The Authorities! As I mentioned to Raymond when he called, I do apologize for not contacting you when I knew Chloë was collecting me. I hope this oversight on my part didn't inconvenience you or otherwise keep you from a latte gathering! Thanks again. Cheers, Patrizzio!

I will drop by. Wayne

Hi Donna Florida and Cactus!

Glad to hear that the countdown has started! Sorry that it has taken me so long to say hello.  Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Chris and Jim!

Thanks for sending along the latest Montague UK website, Jim. Have you had a chance to see bikes yet? Not a big deal but was just wondering what you thought. As I think I've mentioned, I really don't want to buy anything until I have a chance to test ride possibilities.  Also, thanks for flexibility regarding our dates with you. I'm actually going to try booking this evening as last time I looked at sites provided by Raymond, they wouldn't allow me to book that far in advance.

I gather you may well have already heard about my latest misadventure yesterday afternoon! Sent a message to thank Sylvia for her help in alerting The Authorities! As I mentioned to Raymond when he called this morning to inquire as to my state, I did apologize for not contacting Sylvia when I finally knew Chloë was collecting me at the hospital. Concussed or not, I can never remember Cora Lee's or Chloë's mobile numbers!  I mentioned that I hoped that this oversight on my part didn't inconvenience her or otherwise keep her from a latte gathering! Cheers to you both, Patrizzio!

Hi Big Al!

I'll certainly need to take an aspirin or something stronger after my latest misadventure yesterday afternoon! Had a bike crash on 27th and Crown. Anyway, I'm alive and so, so fine. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Well, since the Basil book launch starts at 4 (as I recall) 2:30 pm at Mahony's sounds about right.  We can have a few pints and be all warmed up for the launch. Patrick, maybe you should not ride your bike to this event, eh!

Hi Stompin' and Big Al!

See you at Mahoney & Sons, at 2:30pm, on May 7th, on foot! Cheers, Patrizzio!

A 2:30 start seems  good. See you there. Tom

Hi Paolo!

I'll certainly need some single malt after my latest misadventure yesterday afternoon! Had a bike crash on 27th and Crown. Had planned to attend the VWF Book Sale and AGM but was still at VGH until just after 6:00pm and really in no shape to go anywhere once home! I gather Cora Lee had told you earlier that I was going to be in Winnipeg for Dram but I changed my flight to be home before tasting! That being the case, I'd like to order five tickets from you. I'm planning to use them for birthday gifts and thank-yous for work done at our loft by various friends so Income Tax receipt can be made out to me. Let me know how you'd like me to pay you. I can simply walk over to the VWF Office and pay there, telling them the tickets go to your team. Kathy Shoemaker told me about the competition last Friday at the SLAIS evening. (Coincidentally, I bumped into Liisa and made the connection to you and Kjell as he said that you were going to visit her on Sunday when I saw him for Emperor and dinner last week. Your name was mentioned and she said she was going to see you later that weekend. She was in the same class as Colin Preston, CBC Media Librarian who delivered address. Through further coincidence I was invited to sit with some of his other classmates by David Ansom, obviously a Library School student at the time. For my part, I I knew him casually, primarily because he lived near us, in a small basement suite on 12th and MacKenzie.) Anyway, let me know about the ticket payment and we'll plan accordingly. Cheers, Patrizzio!

For once, read your message from stem to stern. I am intrigued to find the phrase "common sense" used toward the end of the message. Surely this is a figure of speech that crept in unawares.

I hope that you take your time in getting up on the bike.  I hope that another term perhaps unfamiliar to you, "prudence," seeps into your vocabulary as well.

I am hoping that you will find that, once your groin is somewhat healed and the open wounds closed over, that you will consider a few laps in the pool. Perhaps you will rediscover your ancient affection for swimming.  Land sports put a lot of strain on aging bodies (mine at least, perhaps not yours) so I hope you will consider revising your workout regime a bit.  Part of my motivation in retiring is to reduce the risk I know I take each time I get on my cycle.  Anyway, give it some thought....

I am very distressed that you are so badly hurt, and know how easily a tiny bit of shoe or pedal just touching the road can put you unconscious into the hospital.  It's a pity to waste the precious time of one's retirement recovering from injuries.  Surely you want to be at full strength when you are in Cornwall??
Nice pics anyway...that chest shot....grrrrr Cactus

Glad to learn that your cognitive abilities appear to be intact! Must say I was truly enjoying the amazing resolution on photos exhibited by my brand new iPad, until up popped your pitifully battered body.  thanks for sharing!  Well, take care, and take it easy for awhile. My condolences to the recovery room staff.  City riding is fraught with peril I second a return to the pool. Watch out what you take your painkillers with! Wishing you a speedy recovery. Nancy

 Hi again, Floridian and Vincenzo!

Thank you both for the kind thoughts and even more concerned advice. I appreciate the former and will place under consideration the latter. Life itself is fraught with peril I'm sure I need not remind either of you, Dear Friends. Furthermore, I spit on painkillers so no need to worry on that account! At ant rate, I'll be immobilized, other than perhaps a stationary bicycle in next few days, by aches and pains and inclement weather so pool ward I plan to head to begin my recuperation. Onward! Fight!! Cheers, Patrizzio!!!

Pics: At Nicole's/Marvinator's place this past Sunday. They live in a very comfortable condo off Lonsdale, in North Vancouver. Josh is Sarge's cousin's son staying downstairs for a month or so before moving to Whistler.

Hi Pat,

Sorry to see that you’ve had another low flying prang! Lucky you fell on your head! Seriously though - so pleased that you are ok; were you in traffic when you came down? Things sure can go pear shaped in a hurry!

We’ve just come back from a few days camping with Mark and the girls at a remote beach area in the southern most part of the state. Camped in a secluded spot overlooking a beautiful sheltered bay just 20 meters from the water’s edge – sheer bliss!

Tina’s Mum is finally back in her house but sadly has just been diagnosed with cancer of the cervix – poor old soul can’t take a trick at the moment. Tina has to take her for an appointment with the oncologist next Wednesday to plot out the way forward – hopefully they can come up with a treatment that is not too invasive given her ongoing problems.

Has all the work on the loft come to an end yet? Hope all are well – please pass on our regards to everyone. Ooroo for now Trevor

Hi TNT!

Doesn't take long for word to spread does it! Thanks for good wishes if couched in nasty comments; "Lucky you
fell on your head" indeed!

Glad you had a wonderful camping outing with Mark and The Goils but terribly sorry to learn about Tina's Mom. Poor Flamin' is facing much the same situation with her Mother back in Dartmouth. She is home tonight after a week in Mexico with four or five other girlfriends. Sarge said they would come up after she is back but no sign of them yet so don't know if plane is late or she's simply too tired to visit.

Loft wok is essentially finished. This past Monday I had to wait at home for a phone call from chap who was to replace the window at the loft. Met him at 1:30pm and chatted with him while he did so. Very friendly, cpmpetent man so it was more than a delight to watch him work. I had no idea how pane was going to be removed so found it fascinating to see the process unfold. Right on his price quotation, ($260, including four new handles), and didn't have to pay any tax as I gave him cash!

By the time I was home it was almost 4:00pm so I just did some errands on my bike, but 10 K up to Young Brothers and then to No Frills. However, it was a most pleasant afternoon by then, (skies opened and a downpour ensued when Daryl was finishing window), with clear blue sky and warm sunshine. That evening, Cora Lee and I attended a SLAIS Alumni event at VPL downtown and enjoyed the evening immensely. Aside from anything else, I bumped into a woman, Liisa, (Finnish spelling!),I'd only ever heard about through mutual friends. I made the connection to these friends, Paul and Kjell, as latter said that the two of them were going to visit her on Sunday when I saw him for Emperor and dinner this past Thursday afternoon. During a conversation, at the Friday gathering, Paul's name was mentioned and Liisa said she was going to see him later that weekend. She was in the same class as Colin Preston, CBC Media Librarian who delivered address. Through further coincidence I was invited to sit with some of his other classmates by David Ansom, obviously a Library School student at the time. For my part, I I knew him casually, primarily because he lived near us, in a small basement suite on 12th and MacKenzie. Anyhow, it was quite an interesting get-together!

I gather you know about my my latest misadventure yesterday afternoon via Facebook! Chloë arrived about 5:30pm. (That is another story as, via one of the nurses, I sent a message to friend Sylvia, wife of Robo Man, asking if she might be able to fetch me from hospital or else help alert The Sisterhood Authorities! Concussed or not, I can never remember Cora Lee's or Chloë's mobile numbers! I knew CL was at a bloody meeting and Chloë was still at work but I assumed I'd be able to reach Ray or Sylvia on their land-line, which the nurse found on-line. As I mentioned to Raymond when he called this morning to inquire as to my state, I did apologize for not contacting Sylvia when I finally knew Chloë was collecting me at the hospital.  I mentioned that I hoped that this oversight on my part didn't inconvenience her or otherwise keep her from a latte gathering!

Funnily enough I noticed a number of cameramen filming in the Emergency Area while I was waiting to be seen. When Chloë arrived I was just about to be discharged and after she inquired about my injuries she said that she had been to elementary and high school with one of the film crew. A few minutes later, Kevin, came by and Chloë introduced herself and her injured Papa! Quite a bright young man, as you can imagine. Now a producer for Knowledge Network. Somehow we started talking about what he was doing and he told us that quite recently he had been to LA on business. He was walking to his rental car, with a friend, seven months pregnant, when he literally fell face first onto the sidewalk! He'd suffered a heart attack! He's only 37 as is Chloë. The friend commenced to try to resuscitate him until paramedics arrived. They whisked him to UCLA Medical but had to give him electro-shocks twice, en route. Of course, he is lucky to be alive and now has an ICD, an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, a device I'd not heard of before. I gather it is somewhat similar to a pacemaker, but different! Quite an afternoon between my accident, the non-stop yowling and meeting Chloë's former classmate on location! Anyway, I'm alive and so, so fine. Fondestos to you both. Cheers, Patrizzio!

P, Thanks for the update and the forensic photos. I cant wait until the Emerg room video release. Good to know you are headed to the family doctor. By then you should have a sense as to whether there is any lasting affect from the knock on the coconut. As to the groin injury the Chiro may be the quickest way to get an answer to that question. Interesting on those quiet streets how many people were around to assist. My question is what happened to the car (and driver) you were sort of avoiding. In any case myself and the sisterhood wish you a speedy recovery. Let me know if there is anything I can do. G

 Hi Giggster!

Thanks to The Sisterhood for their best wishes. Perhaps you might direct your inquiries regarding the mysterious motorist to them and/or the Lexus Polizei! Funny that you mention waiting for the release of the Emergency video. Forgot to mention that their was quite a scene beside me with a First Nations man who was obviously drunk or under the influence of some drug or other or both. He'd been smashed in the face by someone's fist and literally howled for most of the time he was beside me. He had to be restrained but kept pulling at the straps and yelling a blue streak. I had to laugh, in spite of my own discomfort, when one of the nurses walking by muttered to herself that she could hardly wait until he lost his voice. Don't actually think that happened but rather he was sedated after having been examined!

Thanks for your offer of help but managing the bike pick-up was certainly  much appreciated. I hope I'm a tad more mobile by tomorrow. However, don't worry, I'll call if I need malt, for sure! Thanks again. Cheers, Il Quasi-Ambulatore!

Patrick! What a story . . . and photos too.

I am certainly glad you are all right (in a relatively-speaking sort of way).  As I mentioned when you visited, my brother was hit by a careless (though non-drunk and very contrite) 19-year-old driver while cycling on the Dollarton highway last fall.  But he came out of it much better than you.  Or me, for that matter . . . I think I described my mishap shortly after acquiring my new bike in 2010.  Karen and I cycled from Science World to New Westminster, but lost the bike path as we neared the end, due to poor signage.  Long story short . . . I veered into a lamp-post when we were cycling along a very narrow, bumpy non-bike path.  I wasn't knocked out, but I did end up in the Emergency Room.  No real damage though - just one massive, blue-purple bruise and a few cuts and scrapes.  I went back to work the next day, but for a few days, I felt like I was about 90 years old.

Overall, your story does not enhance my confidence about pursuing my cycling aspirations . . . .  However, your other narratives, and the fact that Andrew has also just acquired a new bike, are quite motivating.  So I'm going to try it once my foot is fully healed.

No big news from my part.   Reading, DVDs, visits  from friends and family etc. . . . . One of my friends came over on Sunday and we went for a drive around UBC - stopped at the lookout, then Spanish Banks, sat in sun while catching up (she was just back after three months in Florida).  Given my recent constraints, it was tonic to get out and spend time by the water, in sight of mountains, enjoying the sun, even if not in a vigorous way!

Here are a couple of bike-crash links for you (both associated with my brother's accident):

Cyclist Hit By Car On Dollarton Tonight - entry on a North Shore cycling blog by a witness to the aftermath.  As you'll see if you scroll down and read the rest of the thread, Greg himself posted a comment a few days later.

Another Bike Crash Stokes Call for Change - report in North Shore News.

Glad you can still make it on Monday.  I look forward to seeing  you.  Meanwhile, take it
easy!!!! Janet

Hi again, Janet!

Thanks for good wishes and web sites. I'm a bit like you now with more time for reading, DVDs, etc! Thanks again for your sympathy. I do hope I'm a tad more mobile by tomorrow. Cheers, Il Quasi-Ambulatore!

Glad to hear you will be alright after such a scare. Just think if you hadn't had a helmet on!!! The groin pain, sounds logical that it would be pulled muscles from the feet still being attached to the pedals. However, did they take xrays of your pelvis? Some groin pain can be referred from the hip, although I am sure if you did something to the bones you would not be able to weight bear at all.
Thanks for letting us know all the news, and the graphic photos!! All the best for a speedy recovery. Sylvia
Hi again, Sylvia!

Thanks for best wishes! I'm hoping I have suffered but pulled muscles but will certainly mention pelvis to my doctor on Friday. Can never be too careful. (I simply cannot imagine the extent of my head injuries had I not been wearing a helmet!) Thanks for pointing out possibility of some bone damage.

Thanks again for your offer of help to come by the hospital. I do hope I'm a tad more mobile by tomorrow. However, don't worry, I'll call if I need malt, for sure! Thanks again. Cheers, Il Quasi-Ambulatore!

Hi Patrick, I feel somewhat of a piker, no blood or stitches at all.  I hope that your recovery goes well.   Perhaps you should reconsider the whole biking thing much like I should consider the cross country thing!  Not a likelihood, I know.  Thanks for the photos.  Really enjoyed our dinner and particularly the lamb which was delicious.  All the best for the next few weeks as you get back to normal, Ann

Hi again, Ann!

Thanks for best wishes! Surely you are not as stubborn and/or headstrong as I am made out to be!

Thanks, as well, for your sage advice. Glad you enjoyed dinner. I do hope I'm a tad more mobile by tomorrow. However, don't worry, I'll call you if I need malt, for sure! Cheers, Il Quasi-Ambulatore!
