De-Nesting Diaries: Bright Monday, April 1st

Guard well within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness. -George Sand [pen name of Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin], novelist (1804-1876)

Renewal Monday
Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday and is celebrated as a holiday in some largely Christian cultures, especially Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox cultures. Easter Monday in the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar is the second day of the octave of Easter Week and analogously in the Eastern Orthodox Church is the second day of Bright Week.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church Easter Monday is known as "Bright Monday" or "Renewal Monday". The services that day, as in the rest of Bright Week, are quite different than during the rest of the year and are similar to the services on Pascha (Easter Sunday) and include an outdoor procession after the Divine Liturgy; while this is prescribed for all days of that week, often they are only celebrated on Monday and maybe a couple of other days in parish churches, especially in non-Orthodox countries. Also, when the calendar date of the feast day of a major saint, e.g., St. George or the patron saint of a church or one's name day, falls during Holy Week or on Easter Sunday, the saint's day is celebrated on Easter Monday.

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. -Albert Schweitzer, philosopher, physician, musician, Nobel laureate (1875-1965)
Hello all, Here's more news from France:
March 30 – market day in Pezenas.  The streets around the town centre were all full of booths.  Fruits, vegetables, flowers, meats, breads, clothing, kitchen stuff, etc., etc., etc.  As well, the streets were packed with people.  They come in from miles around.  We bou8ght some great bread and fresh strawberries, as well as some tapenade.

We then went to Le Tour Pavee, a local creperie, for lunch.  After we got the car and headed north to Roquefort.  We went to a couple of the cheese producers, and took a tour of one of the caves.  Bought some cheese and local wine, and then went a bit further north so we could cross the Viaduct de Millau. It is a modern engineering marvel.  After seeing the bridge, we headed back to Pezenas. Pasta again for dinner, accompanied by some Seigneurs de Peyreviel Cotes de Millau 2009 – a interesting blend of syrah, cabernet sauvignon and gamay. For a cheese course – Roquefort of course. This was followed by fresh strawberries.

March 31 – Easter – Went to Carcassonne today.  It was a nice warm sunny day,so walking around the medieval town was pleasant.  Carcassonne is one of those must see sights – it is absolutely spectacular!!  In addition, today was an artisans’ market day – thought we had lost Jo-Anne many times, as there were so many booths and other attractions.  We went into the Basilica of St. Nazarius, which dates from the 12th century.  It had beautiful stained glass, but the mood was somewhat destroyed by the people on keyboards and accordion practicing in front of the altar – Scott Joplin is not what you expect to hear in this kind of setting.

We wandered around the town and found a place to eat.  We had to have cassoulet and a  local wine – Cite de Carcassonne 2011 Fontaine Grande.  I am not quite sure, but I think it was the same restaurant where I first had cassoulet the last time I was in Carcassonne.  Anyways, it was great.  After sating our appetites, we wandered around a bit more, and then headed back to Pezenas.  After all that cassoulet, we did not feel very hungry, so we just had a late snack of bread, Roquefort, chevre, and some Saint Saturnin 2010 Vin d’une Nuit.

Pat,
Great rides indeed! Still incapacitated and will have to see what the doctor says re exercise. BP and pulse rate completely out of whack of late. Hope to arrange an appointment tomorrow.
Supposed to have friends arriving today but haven't heard from them as yet. Hope they are in better health than the last pair who stayed on Thursday night en route to China and Katmandu for a hiking holiday. Ray

Hi Raymond!

Sorry to hear that you are still struggling to regulate your blood pressure and heart rate. Must be worrisome. Hope dottore can give you permission to re-join peleton soon. Giorgio and I are meeting at Maple/25th at 11:00am for a jaunt out to Steveston to have lattes! Should be an enjoyable run given lovely blue sky. Take care of yourself. Cheers, Patrizzio!
P,

Thanks for heads up on sample sale. Need a ride something fierce today after excessive perogie Fest lastereve. Will let you know the when and if as soon as sisterhood is awake. W
Hi Pearly Dig!

Enjoyed the clip muchly! Thanks for the alert.

I gather Robo Man's lard fire is still on the schlitz. Seems as if the inspection lever put a donkey stench in his flood fissure and on his chart plate! Hopes to see the proctor with sorrow.

Let me know when the Misterfood bake and we can arrange to comedy the stogie quest. All in food wine. Britney Spears, I implore you!

Happy Easter Morana!

Trust you are well! Been a busy end of 2012/start of 2013. Left Vancouver on December 12th, driving, to spend Christmas in LA with Ayn, Chloë's sister, and grandsons. Then on to Dallas, New Orleans, flew to Sint Maarten from Dallas after we drove back from NO. Home on February 17th and we seem to be busier than ever and have simply not had a moment to catch our collective wits. Primarily has to do with working on our loft property, (We bought it in 1998 and Chloë lived there initially, when in town, otherwise we rented it out.), so that we can finally de-nest Chloë! With respect to this coming summer, we plan to arrive in London on July 10th. Imagine we will spend a few days there and then we would train to York where we spend time with friends, Chris and Jim. At the beginning of August we begin a house exchange near Truro for a month.

Of course, you are more than welcome to visit us in Cornwall, over August, so please think about that. As well, I'm trying to stitch together a week or two, in Languedoc, cycling from a rented farmhouse as a base, at the beginning of September. Perhaps this might interest you. Cora Lee and The Sisterhood Book Club will be lollygagging around Italy for three weeks, after Cornwall. A couple of cycling mates from here might join me as well. Let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly! Fondestos from Cora Lee and Chloë. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Happy Easter Yael!

Trust you are well! Fondestos from Cora Lee and Chloë. Hello and greetings to one and all. Cheers, Patrizzio!

P, great ride today. Thanks.

Weather may break tonight with rain Tuesday -- Wednesday looks promising.W

Hi Pearly Digs!

I'm sipping as I scribe! Thanks for the Cellar website. I've already received confirmation that I'm on mailing list!

Grand ride indeed. Back at The Heartbreak Terrace with 61.7 K over 3:00:44, AVG 20.4 KPH, MAX 46.6 KPH so it is quite, demonstrably obvious that you slowed me down! Nothing to do with the hilly terrain and the windjammage, of course!

I'm attending a UBC Library Emeritii Luncheon on Wednesday so not sure about whether I'll ride. Given timing I might just pop over to the Aquatic Centre, on Beach, beforehand, for a reasonably early swim. Otherwise, probably shifting furniture! Let's see what weather looks like. Cheers, Trizzio!
Cora Lee:

This website is from Whirlygig. Looks interesting and he says venue is wonderful, jazz incredible. Cheers, Patrizzio!

P,

Hope you are enjoying that smalljavatogo…Glad you included the translation. I was little lost after the lard fire. W

Hi Colin and Jo-Anne!

The south of France seems to be agreeing with you! Wish we'd been able to spend more time in Avignon. Never been to Carcassonne so hope to rectify that this coming September.

Our Easter weekend weather has been truly gorgeous, particularly last two days. Rides have been wonderful. Met Whirlygig at Maple/25th at 11:00am this morning for a jaunt out to Steveston. Followed Cypress all the way to MD and then over Arthur Laing into Richmond, along Russ Baker Way, dipsy doodling onto Dover Crescent to Lynas Lane and then on Railway Avenue all the way to Brunswick Drive. Dyke Road along the water to No 3 Rd and then onto Finn Road/No 4 Rd to turn right onto Westminister Hwy. Then to Shell Rd all the way to River Rd and then over the CSTB. Up Heather to 37th and then west until we hit Highbury and then turned north here, through Memorial West Park, turning left on 29th past St George's Jr School Campus to take Wallace past Howard Hurt's house on the corner of 23rd or 22nd. Can never remember unless I look at the street sign each time!

Once across 16th we dipsy doodled past Byng and made our way to Highbury and then across 10th and 4th to take the Seaside Bicycle Route on 3rd all the way to Macdonald. Left Giorgio here and made for Kits Point where I did a quick loop there to push my odometre reading up to 59 K so that I'd log over 60 K by the time I was home. Back at The Heartbreak Terrace with 61.7 K over 3:00:44, AVG 20.4 KPH, MAX 46.6 KPH so it is quite obvious that Whirlygig slowed me down, relative to rides of previous two days! Nothing to do with the hilly terrain and the windjammage, of course!

Sun is finally starting to feel warm on one's face so hope the trend continues. Blossoms are out in full on the cherry tree outside our bedroom window so we might even be able to stat sitting on the patio soon!

Time to move furniture. Cora Lee has grand plans for the bedroom occupied, for aeons, by Chloë. When will the painting and home decorating ever end? Cheers, Patrizzio!

So we went to science world yesterday and Corey got to try out the empathy apron!!! — with Corey William.
  • Patrick James Dunn What's the big deal? It's just a Kevlar vest with extra ammo pouches and padding to hide the stomach he's developed since he stopped working out regularly!
Hi Bev and Kev!

Thanks for the wonderful dinner invitation. Will call from Perth airport shortly to let you know we are in town! Can hardly wait for the rice pudding!!! Fondestos from Cora Lee, Chloë and Maggie.  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Lady Patrizia and Sir James!

Thanks for the wonderful phone call. Terrific to hear your voice and catch up on your busy lives. Glad you are both well. Fondestos from Cora Lee, Chloë and Maggie.  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi again, Sir James!

Unfortunately, link doesn't work! Cheers, Patizzio!

Hi Janet!

Had a long chat with Jamie Gairdner yesterday evening. He asked to be remembered to you and sends along best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Appreciate the fact that you appreciate my attention to punctuation, spelling, etc., as I cannot abide the "text" messages which now pass for correspondence! I won't start my rant but perhaps we can chat about this when I drop around.

I'm hoping to pop by either tomorrow or on Wednesday. I have a number of errands to run, in your neighbourhood, on Tuesday and a luncheon at UBC on Wednesday so am hoping to combine a visit with one or the other of those outings.

How time flies! Karen a grandmother!!! Our place, in April, for Eyob and family and your foot seems like a good time. More to chat about.

Hi, Patrick,

thanx 4 ur message :-) Happy to see you tomorrow or Wednesday.

Tomorrow, I have a doctor's appointment at 3:00 p.m. - my ride is coming
at 2:30 p.m.   And on Wednesday, Karen and Greg are coming over at
around 3:30 so that we can go to the notary, which is about 1/4 block
away (so I am easily able to hobble with my cane).  I need them both to
sign off on my PA and RA, which I have been meaning to do for ages.

Either day, anytime from around 10:00 a.m. on would be good for me -
whatever suits for you. Hope you had a splendid Easter weekend! Janet

Hi Janet!

I liked your text message! Fabulous!!!

If it isn't raining heavily, I might cycle up to Kerrisdale around 10:00am so I would drop by before noon or slightly after. I'll wait and see what the heavens have planned in terms of precipitation.

Easter weekend was actually quite relaxed so most enjoyable. Not as busy as Christmas so rather pleasant to be able to be somewhat lazy.

Here is the picture I said I was attaching. Realized when you mentioned it that I had not attached the file in the first place! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Claire de la Lune and Grogg!

Thanks for the update. Wonderful that the camper is working out. Great to catch up on your busy lives. China sounds fascinating. You are always welcome here at The Island Inn. Glad you are both well, even though still working! Does Claire ever bump into Jenne Roberts in Darwin? I've not had an email reply from her in ages.
Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both.  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Gayle and Derek!

Thanks for the newsy update. Wonderful snap. Great to catch up on your busy lives. Please pass along regards to the Cotheys. Had wondered about last few messages from your yahoo email address. Was sceptical so just deleted messages! Chloë's work seems to be going very well so far. She's a very, very busy girl at the moment, working at Aunt Leah's, Monday to Wednesday, and then shifts at GIB for rest of week. She took off to Victoria this Saturday, for a few days. A "hen party" for Jen, one of young women who worked at GIB. She moved to VI to be with her fiancée, a chef who opened a restaurant in Nanaimo. I think Krissy probably knows her as well. How are they doing?

Not sure if I mentioned it or not but I'm thinking pretty seriously of buying a bike once in England. Probably do so when in Harrogate/York so that I'd have it by the time we arrive in Cornwall. This way I'll have something for future visits, both to England and the Continent. Any suggestions for models/shops? Friend Jim, in Yorkshire, has sent along a number of websites but thought I's see what you think as well. Not a big deal but would appreciate your thoughts.
Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both.  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Chris and Jim!

Sorry to hear about your cool weather. Better pop over to here for some respite. Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both.  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Joe!

Thanks for the newsy update about Rose in Italy! Is she home yet? Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both.  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Big Al!

Thanks for stunning photographs! Quite remarkable.

Are you attending Emeritii luncheon this coming Wednesday?

Sun is finally starting to feel warm on one's face so hope the trend continues. Blossoms are out in full on the cherry tree outside our bedroom window so we might even be able to stat sitting on the patio soon!

Cheers, Patrizzio!   Yes, I'll be there!  See you.

Hello Dearest Tomiko and Toshi!

Trust you are both well! Terribly sorry that we couldn't connect while you were in San Diego, Toshi,  but I know Ayn had a wonderful visit with you. We made it home on February 17th and we seem to be busier than ever and have simply not had a moment to catch our collective wits. Hello from Clara and Dusty as well. They return to Winnipeg on April 10th so are not looking forward to being back in the snow drifts again! Fondestos from Cora Lee and Chloë to you both, Tomiko and Toshi. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi PATRICK
If you are not too tired of working you and your wife can see Rose tomorrow
at the Vancouver Airport at 2 PM from Amsterdam flight 681. My son will be there to pick her up.   Ciao joe

Hi Joe!

Would be great to see Rose and meet your son but tomorrow is another busy day for both Cora Lee and I. Best regards to Rose from us. Cheers, Patrizzio!
