Jambalaya Diaries: Friday, February 15th

The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas. -Linus Pauling, chemist, peace activist, author, educator; Nobel Prize in chemistry, Nobel Peace Prize (1901-1994)

Eggcorn:

MEANING:
noun: An erroneous alteration of a word or phrase, by replacing an original word with a similar sounding word, such that the new word or phrase also makes a kind of sense.
For example: "ex-patriot" instead of "expatriate" and "mating name" instead of "maiden name".

ETYMOLOGY:
Coined by linguist Geoffrey Pullum (b. 1945) in 2003. From the substitution of the word acorn with eggcorn. Earliest documented use as a name for this phenomenon is from 2003, though the term eggcorn has been found going back as far as 1844, as "egg corn bread" for "acorn bread".

In 1964, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Apted (Gorillas in the Mist, The World is Not Enough) began his career as a researcher on a new experimental series for Granada TV called Seven Up, which explored the Jesuit maxim “Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” The original concept was to interview 14 children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds from all over England, to see whether a class system was in place. By asking the children about their lives and their dreams for the future, differences in attitudes and opportunity were witnessed.

For almost a half century, Apted has interviewed the original group every seven years, examining the progression of their lives. Now they are 56. From cab driver Tony, to schoolmates Jackie, Lynn and Susan and the iconoclast Neil, the present age brings more life-changing decisions and surprising developments. From success and disappointment, marriage and childbirth, to poverty and illness, nearly every facet of life is discussed with the group, as they assess whether their lives have ultimately been ruled by circumstance or self-determination.

Hello Skiers!

Will have the red carpet out, (You will have to clean it first. Part of the "working " holiday chores!), when you arrive at YVR. I'll be there to pick you up. I usually track flight and time it so that I arrive about the time you have collected your bags. I circle until weary travelers appear outside Arrivals. Sometimes one can park, for a few minutes, just down from doors but often surly security officers move cars along. In any event, keep an eye out for my car, Titanium Green Ford Escape with a bike rack. I'll wear a Goldilocks outfit to help with identification!

Arrived in Berkeley yesterday around 6:00pm to stay with close friends, Nancy and David, who, unfortunately, happened to be home! We enjoyed a lovely dinner and caught up on everyone's lives. Will be heading up to Sonoma shortly. There are two wineries we wish to visit. Will pick up two cases of wine at David Coffaro, (Already paid for as I belong to the "futures" program. Wine had not been released when we were there in December), and then hope to buy a case at Mounts, a tiny winery that was closed when we were last there. Then on to Redding for the night and dinner at our favourite place there, Jack's Bar & Grill. They serve incredible 16oz filets. Usually take half home in a doggie bag to eat next day on the road. Saturday we'll drive to Portland to stay with Marilyn and Mike Oliver and stash our hootch with them. Sunday home to Vancouver to harangue Chloë into doing all the housework she neglected to do since we've been away!

In fact, we just had a chat with her and had some wonderful news. She was chosen for a job as an event planner/fund raiser for Aunt Leah's, a local charity which works with youth at risk. Only three days a week, so far, but this will allow her to keep her job at Granville Island Brewery while she is gaining much needed experience in her chosen field.

Really looking forward to seeing you both. Take care of yourselves on the slopes until then. Fondestos from Cora Lee. Cheers, Patrizzio!

PS: Our number is 603-734-9200 (H), Chloë's cell: 604-341-0291. Cora Lee never takes her cell with her or answers it at home!

Pics: At Ayn's apartment in LA. Ayn with Tina, our friend from Adelaide. She was en route to Vancouver to fly to Kamloops to join her husband, Trevor, skiing at Sun Peaks since mid-January. Alejandro; Pierre with his proud Grandmother!

Congrats to my sister Chloe on her new job!!! So happy for her!!
Pat,
Let's make it Saturday, March 2 if you are both available as George and Kerry have another arrangement the previous Saturday. We both remember Tina and Trevor.
    Drive carefully.
Ray
Dearest Digitale!

You and the Amercan Patient are far too, too kind! Cora Lee has been convinced to stay only because of the laundry issue! Thank you, again!

We will be leaving from Redding and I assume that is about six and a half hours +/-, to Cornelius Pass. We would hope to leave by 8:00am but certainly before 9:00am. This being the case I assume we would be knocking on your open, generous door by 4:00pm, at a conservative estimate. If we are earlier, we'll help vacuum and dust!

Wonderful that Chuckerini and Jacqueria might be joining us for dinner. We will have hootch, pre-wine cellar storage pilferage and will also pick a few things, en route. As we pass through Williams, en route to I 5 from Napa, we plan to stop at Granzella's, a fab Italian deli. We will bring olivettii and some other picklage to contribute to the hors d'oeuvres. I am being paged for dinner so must away. Thanks again, muchly, muchly. Look forward to seeing you two and the other Oregonian Freeloaders! Fondestos and Cheers, CoraLeeta and Patrizzio!
Patrick,

My sister gave me an Ina Garten recipe for Nape Wine Vinegrette.  It calls for sparkling wine vinegar.  We substituted white wine vinegar because we couldn't find the sparkling stuff, even at the specialty stores.  But,  I see it is available on-line at stores in Napa Valley -- the St. Helena Olive Oil Company, for 28 dollars, and Katz for $10.  If you see it on your travels, would you please buy me two bottles of whichever you think best.   I will pay you in US currency if that is acceptable.  Think it's still worth a little bit.
Chuck is coming for dinner.  Jackie too, but she might be a bit late.  Gives us more time for drinking.
There's no gluten in jasmine rice is there.   I'm assuming not. Marilyn

Hi Patrick (and Corinne)....I found your message and photos in our
"junk" folder....obviously not where it should end up! Anyway, I glanced
over it briefly and can't wait to sit down and actually read every word
so that we will be better prepared for visiting NO when we go in June.
Thanks so much! Great to see you both today, and looking no worse for
wear and tear being on the road for so long, I might say! Pat
