    Hi again,
As our friend Art so succinctly put it, "death to fungi."   But there is also bacteria to be killed, and apparently Mike's doctors are waging war on all fronts.
Tomorrow he is having a PICC line (a peripherally inserted central catheter) inserted in his upper arm. For the next 42 days, in addition to his oral anti fungal medication, he will have to drive to the hospital for daily antibiotic injections.  The drug they are using is ceftriaxone.
Here's the dope on a PICC line.

" . . is long, slender, small, flexible tube that is inserted into a peripheral vein, typically in the upper arm, and advanced until the catheter tip terminates in a large vein in the chest near the heart to obtain intravenous access. It is similar to other central lines as it terminates into a large vessel near the heart."  "Using ultrasound technology to visualize a deep, large vessel in the upper arm, the PICC catheter is inserted by a specially trained and certified PICC nurse specialist. Post insertion, a chest x-ray is obtained to confirm ideal placement."
So for the next few weeks, the poor guy will be walking around with the wound-vac machine in his "man purse" and a tube dangling from it to his chest,  And now there will be this catheter thing in his arm for six weeks.  Obviously no squash for a long time.  He is one unhappy man.  I am finding myself very short tempered and have blown up twice the past week over absolute trivia.  It occurred to me yesterday that I am really angry, not at anyone in particular, but certainly about this situation which is continuing now into its 5th month, and is a real psychological drain.  Would just like to have life back to normal . . . but then what's that.  There's always something on the horizon.

Mike would probably enjoy some good humorous emails

Hi Patrick. Thanks for your update and photos. I assume you are either home now or on your way. Glad you enjoyed your time in the Caribbean. We certainly enjoyed cruising the islands last year and it was great to swim in warm water! I certainly don't swim here. Way to cold for me, although as children growing up in Cornwall we were always in the ocean. I'm not the greatest swimmer in any event but it is a pleasure when the water feels like a warm bath. I think the warmest water I have ever been in was when we were in the Seychelles. We attended Mark's sisters wedding there. Krissy was her bridesmaid. Would love to go back but it has become extremely expensive.

We have now booked our flight and will be leaving the UK on August 6th. I mentioned in my last email that I have been trying to obtain insurance so that you may use our car while you are down here. However, I have been hitting a brick wall so far. As I explained its the individual that's insured here. All the insurance companies I have contacted so far will only give temporary insurance for European drivers licence holders only or those with Australian licences which is rather bizarre. One company I contacted said they may be able to do temporary insurance but only based on third party only. Which means my vehicle would not be covered in case of any accident. Before they can give me any quote they require some information on you.

    1 date of birth
2 how long you have held a full licence
3 if you have had any vehicle accidents within the last 5 years
If you give me this info I will continue to investigate temporary insurance. Failing that you will have to rent a vehicle since public transport around Cornwall is patchy at best and impossible if you want to get to the more picturesque and remote areas.

Gayle and I just returned from Southampton. We spent the week looking after Tristan who was ill with tonsillitis poor lad. I also came down with a bug which is still with me. Prior to going to Southampton we had some pretty decent Spring like weather so managed some nice coastal walks. Few pictures attached I took on the walk. One picture is of a place called Tubby's Head. This is where I fell in when I was about 14 years old! I was fishing for bass with my brother in law. We had climbed down the cliff close to the water and my line got snagged in the rock face. I slipped trying to free it and ended up in the sea. Fortunately for me I managed to kick off my Wellington boots which filled with water and my anorak filled with air and helped keep me afloat! My bother in law managed to pull me out with the add of his fishing rod! I then had an uncomfortable walk along the coast path without any boots!

An update on the two piglets. Krissy has landed herself an interesting job in North Van. The owners of three butchers shops want to open artisan sandwich shops starting in North Van so they have hired Krissy to manage the start up, hire staff, develop the type of sandwiches to be sold and generally manage the operation. The salary appears to be good and I believe there is some sort of profit share. They plan on operating Pig on the Street for Saturday markets until May and then Mark will run it full time through September. They will hire someone to work with Mark during this period. In the meantime he has a three month contract with his old school and they will give home another contract in October to take him through until next Spring. All very complicated!
Appears Eastern Canada has been hit hard with snow this past week. Gayle's brother sent us photos of the amount of snow he has had to clear from his driveway. We had 20 years of shovelling snow in Ottawa and I certainly don't miss it!

    Best wishes to you both

    Derek
