Jambalaya Diaries: Tuesday, January 15th

There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest. -Elie Wiesel, writer, Nobel laureate (b. 1928)

Gold. What takes you to Dallas? I'm in Singapore on Friday, HK sat, and Taipei for a week Sunday Chat soon,Tiptoe

Hi Tiptoe!

We spent Christmas in LA/Simi Valley with Ayn and Los Horridos, (Chloë, Rosita and Dusty flew down), then on to Mesa before Dallas. We will drive to New Orleans tomorrow to spend a week with close friends from Naramata, in the Okanagan.  We have an aparmento in the Lower Garden District on Magazine St. Then back to Dallas on January 23rd until the 28th when we fly to St Maarten until February 7th. Staying with very good friends there. Ron is teaching at the university hospital. Rhoda worked for me as a Student Assistant at UBC's Curriculum Lab in 1977!

Back to Dallas for another weekend and then home to Vancouver by February 17th. Enjoy your time in Taiwan. Ruth, our host in Dallas, is originally from Taipei, and Randy met her there when doing graduate work for his PhD. He lived with us at Hotel Kits before and after meeting his future wife!

Fondestestos from Coriandre to you and Kevinator, The Generalissimo! Cheers, Patrice! Pics: Our neighbourhood and building in Dallas.

Glad to know someone else buys magnets. My last two were at The Getty in LA on Oct 29th, a Monet, one of my favourite artists and a photo of J. Paul with the saying, 'Money isn't everything but it sure keeps you in touch with your children'. I thought that was priceless! We were taken to The Getty by a good friend and former, younger neighbour from my growing up days on Kane Avenue North in Silver Heights, Cyndy King Le Vander. Cyndy is an interesting, gutsy, straight from the chest kind of gal, a retired teacher who lives in Camarillo. She is widowed, over a year now, by her husband, Jim, 6 years her junior, who passed an unpleasant death after 2 years  at home with ALS at the age of 55. It was Cyndy's suggestion to go to The Getty and a great one too. I could have spent several more hours there.

We were staying with an 'old' family friend, Ken Walker who lives in Thousand Oaks. Ken is a retired Aeronautical and Electrical Engineer and worked for Howard Hughes at Hughes Air. Ken accompanied us as well. My family met Ken through their RCAF friends in Winnipeg when Ken and his first wife, Elsie, were posted there for two years. They became such good friends that my parents named the 'pregnancy' at the time, Kenneth and made Kenneth Sr his Godfather. That was a smart move on my Mother's part. Ken is twice widowed with no children. He has a niece and a couple of nephews, married with a couple of kids. My brother, Ken, is divorced 'nearly', with 2 children from his first wife, Sharon: Dr. Oliver Leslie, a recent graduate GP, specializing in Sports Medicine in Wpg engaged to Meghan who will be a Paediatrician this spring and Cleo, a film graduate from the U of W.  Oliver, 29, Cleo, 23 and Dad, Ken are all now in Ken Sr's will. I believe they will each get 8%. He is worth over a million so that will be a nice inheritance one day.

Ken is engaged to Michele who has custody of her 2 daughters, Kiera, 15 and Gianna, 12. The divorce is not quite finalized. Sharon has gone through maybe a half dozen lawyers over the past almost 13 plus years. She of course is totally pissed that Ken took her out of his will and is trying desperately to find a way to get hold of some of that inheritance. I personally hope that Ken lives to be at least 100!!! You might not remember that I am the eldest of 10. Mom had us all in 14 years so pretty much pregnant for over 9 years. Ken is a very fit, active, brilliant, 90 year old genius. He can bake amazing, chocolate mainly delights, only for guests, his Doctors and Dentist & staff, never eats them himself, which is one reason why he is 90. Actually, dark chocolate, nuts and coconut are good for you, just in moderation, right! I think it is the oil, butter and sugar! He is also is quite the Gourmet!  I would never think of Ken as elderly!!!!!!

Is Corinne a Celiac or is it a gluten intolerance? I have two girlfriends now who don't eat gluten. This is fast becoming not just a more often diagnosed condition but almost a trend! I note that grocery stores are beginning to carry many more gluten free items. Some restaurants are slowly coming on board with a few selections. There is a restaurant in Calvary which has a completely gluten free menu! Can't recall the name but should be easy to google.

BTW, it is Downton Abbey and I too love it although don't catch it every time. Must away! Maggie

Dear Corinne Pat and Chloe

Our best wishes to all of you and your families for a happy, lucky, healthy and fulfilling New Year!

We hope you are all well an we trust that you are still celebrating wonderful parties, so do we!

Our fondest regards for now, soon more Eveline, Heinz and families

Hello Dearest Famiglia Rothenbuehler!

Sorry that I have not been in touch sooner. Life on the road is very, very busy! Trust your lives go well and that 2013 is unfolding as it should!  Fondestos to you, dearest Eveline and Heinz and family from Corinne. Cheers, Patrizzio!

PS: We are doing a house exchange in Cornwall this August! Come and visit! Hope to manage a visit to Switzerland afterwards. More details later!

Hi, Corinne and Patrick.

Sorry I couldn't have written you sooner.
My mom says big hello to you.

Today I have a sad news.

Unfortunately, Emiko had passed away on Jan.5, soon after I sent you the mail.
The condition changed too sudden to believe...

She had hit by a bicycle while she was walking on a street.
It was on Christmas night.
She hit her head really hard and had serious skull fractures and brain damages.
She had an operation, but damages are only inside of her head not outside.
She had no external injuries or any bleeding.
It's like she's only sleeping.
Only thing we are relieved is that she hadn't suffer much and died peacefully.

We had her funeral last week.
Please see the attached URL below, which are photos we took in DAIKICHI, yakitori restaurant.

Everyone in the photos were there for Emiko.
All of us love her so much and are full of grief.
I told everyone your message and they were really grateful for that.

Emiko and we had a such a wonderful time with you in DAIKICHI,
She was very happy and enjoyed very much of your visit.
We can't thank you enough how much we appreciate you had come to Japan last year!

I'm going to San Diego on Jan.18 until Feb.10 or 12.
Emiko and my mom had been looking very much forward for me to go,
It would be great if I could see you in the States.
I'll keep in touch.

Please continue to have good time in the States. Love you always,Toshiko

Dearest Tomiko and Toshi!

Both Corinne and I cannot say how deeply saddened we were to learn that Emiko had died. Please know that we grieve with you and for you and all of your extended family. It is with a very, very heavy heart that I send this message, knowing how deeply she was loved and what a wonderful person she was. Small, small comfort, of course, but we are are both so glad that we did have the chance to visit with her this past May. The pictures you included remind us again of her charming personality and generous nature. It goes without saying that her memory will never leave our hearts and minds, so much more so, naturally, for you and your mother. Again, deepest condolences on Emiko's untimely death.

Under this very difficult situation I wish I could say, for sure, that we will be able to see you in San Diego. We will drive to New Orleans tomorrow to spend a week with close friends from Naramata, in the Okanagan.  We have an apartmento in the Lower Garden District on Magazine St.

Depending on your travel schedule we might be able to start out return trip, from Dallas, sooner than planned to put us in the vicinity of San Diego by the 11th of February or so. We will have already spent one full weekend with Randy and Ruth before we leave for St Maarten so I'm sure they won't mind if we cut next stay a bit short. Of course we want to see you but don't want to unduly  "complicate" your visit with your ex-boyfriend as we hope that will go well for both of you. At any rate, let us know what you think and we'll plan accordingly.

Much, much love, to you, Toshi, and to your Mother, dear Tomiko! Fondest of  fond regards, Corinne and Patrick!

Dear Patrick,
I was asked to send you an e-mail to inform you that Imre(Jim) died this morning at 6am in St.Paul’s hospital. His sister Julia is here and was with him at that time with Judy.
I don’t know if you remember me but we have met at Imre’s and in the hospital at one of his stays.
If you get this message please respond because Julia would like to know if you received the sad news. Regards, Mari Jensen

What tragic news. Was Emiko one of the Japanese students who lived with you? I don't recall meeting her. I'm sorry to hear this news.

We are enjoying our skiing. Are you on your way to NO tomorrow?
Randy

Dad was this Toshi's aunt??? Poor tosh :(

Very sad news for Toshi and her family…

Love the posters! Love the street cars! Love the owls! What a cool building!

We have been to Dallas, but unfortunately not down town. We had very close American friends, Susan & John Holcomb, living in Dallas, whom we met when John was working for Mobil Oil in Calgary. We drove behind them and their two children on a brief holiday of the area all the way to New Mexico but never got into the city. I do recall the drive from the airport though, wow! all those amazing, intersecting  interchanges! We arrived in Dallas in the summer of '89 to an absolutely sweltering heat! We were then immediately whisked away to their son, Curtis's t-ball game! Then, it was off to a fun Planet Hollywood (do they still exist; guess I could check the internet; don't answer) where we ate hush puppies for the first time. While in Dallas, we took in 6 Flags over Texas. Frank took little Beth, our youngest, almost 7 at the time, on the Roller Coaster. I had to leave, so as not to watch, for fear that she would slip through the bar and fall to her death. I couldn't see Frank's arm around her, too scary! I am terrified of heights! We picked up a loaner car from friends, in fact through Nelson Bunker's Hunt's daughter, Betsy Hunt Curnes. The car actually belonged to her Dad, Bunker, the multi billionaire and silver magnet who, with his brother, cornered the silver markets in 78/79/80, eventually causing the silver markets to plunge!

We had invested in silver in '78 on the advice of a friend in our compound when we were living in Riyadh, SA, 78-80. When the markets began to plummet, after peaking at about $49.00, we managed to pull out at $25.00 and then $16.00. It could have been financially much better for us. My brother, Wayne, an awarded Winnipeg Bankruptcy Lawyer at Fillmore Riley to this day, was our power of attorney but we couldn't get to him fast enough. Where was theinternet back then!!!! We had bought at $4.00 and $8.00. The Hunts or their corporation were charged and went to trial several years ago, forcing them into Bankruptcy. I imagine they are still not poor!

While in Dallas, we were fortunate to be able to take a tour, courtesy of Betsy, of Bunker's fabulous, sprawling working ranch. Bunker and his wife were away on vacation. Our girls and Susan/John's two were thrilled to be able to drive the go-karts around the immediate property. I do know that all of the involved  Hunt children were Directors and present at the trials, in Chicago I believe. I haven't heard much since so not sure what is happening with them. Betsy and I used to correspond, but lost touch after we moved to Sherwood Park. She & her husband, Tom Curnes, were living in Calgary when we were. Tom must be distantly related as I noted that one of the great Aunts had the sir name of Curnes when I was doing my research. Frank tells me that marrying other wealthy family was common among the rich and famous. They moved back to Texas when the boom was lowered on the family  Betsy was a friend I met in the Junior League of Calgary. I did hear that they later lost a young daughter to cancer. We followed Susan & family to Nuevo Laredo, where Susan was born. She took us to her brother's ranch, where we got to watch young bulls being castrated. The children also got to have horse rides, which they loved. I read that Bunker had to sell his horses to pay off the bankruptcy. .

John took a later posting to Jakarta, Indonesia, again with Mobil. Susan loved the life of an Ex Pat! She & John lived there for about 5 years. John eventually got lung cancer. He was a heavy smoker the whole time we knew him, even though their son was a severe asthmatic! John died in a hospital in Singapore. They used to go there for medical and dental appointments. John loved to golf and his problem showed up first on the golf course. His eventual death was questioned by Susan, but there was no autopsy. Susan believes he got a super bug which was covered up by hospital officials. Her life after that has become rather sad. Somehow, most of their money dried up rather quickly. Susan is now in Real Estate in Spring, Texas, outside of Houston and has to work! What a change after their exotic life in Calgary and Jakarta. Her single daughter, Erin, lives with her. Susan also has a son, Curtis, who is married with 3 children, two to his wife from a previous marriage. Susan helps them all! Those were interesting times in our lives!

Hello there Patrick !
Also hello to Cora Lee!

Thanks for your newsy breezy email Dec. 10th.  I believe you will have been around the world in 80 days by the time you arrive back to Vancouver.

Sounds to me like you have friends all over the world now and are capitalizing on that big time!!!    I love it!!

So,  if you return by February we may still have the cool and rainy weather... best to try to avoid coming back until March if you can do it!!

The show 56 UP sounds really interesting..  would like to see that..

Loved your biking descriptive re: around Vancouver..  seems like you're a marathon biker .....  amazing....

My buddy Penny (lives across from Joanne) and I went to Victoria for 5 days and enjoyed the after 5 life over there by going to pubs for dinners and libations and listening to great music ,     The Saturday venue 3:30 to 6:30 is at the Day's Inn where the "regulars " hang out at the same tables each week..    A bit of dancing happens as well...  in between the chairs....  lots of fun!!
We stayed 2 nights at her daughter's place and then at the Exec. Inn where the Bartholomew's pub is on the main floor..  live bands nightly and so can stumble up to the room and no driving necessary..!!

Went to Crescent beach for New Year's eve ..  house party  ...  musicians played until 3 a.m.  lots of food and dancing..  "A" frame house..  so space was limited but great time!!  Next day a few (not us) went for the New Year's day swim.. not my cup of tea!!  We went to watch and then to the Alexander clubhouse for a brunch and more music!!!

THAT is the extent of my travelling..  so far..  not far...

Found a nice venue downtown called the "FAN CLUB" on Granville Street.   Good bands and atmosphere is cosy and warm..  although parking is a hassle.
If we can find good parking we will continue to go but may have to resort to the Wicklow again..  on false creek.

Better do some work..  (you remember that?) ... work..  hmmmmm probably not.  You seem to be on a vacation every day ...lucky you!!

Chat later gater! Jdubya  aka   Joan

Just a reminder the check has to be for Feb. 1st. mom
Hello Patrick and Corine you high end freeloaders,

Looks like a pretty swanky condo you’re inhabiting in Dallas.  Let’s hope your standards aren’t too high for our New Orleans walk-up.

What’s your plan, are you going to do the drive all in one day on Wednesday?  Google Maps say it’s about 7 ½ hrs Dallas to NO via I-45 S and I-10 E.  If that’s your plan, you might want to just drive straight to Louis Armstrong Airport to meet us, and we can all proceed to Magazine St. together.

Do you have a GPS navigator?  If not, I’ll bring my Garmin unit that is great for navigating around cities.

Lynnie and I went to see Zero Dark Thirty last night.  Very riveting, a great movie.  She thinks that we only need to see Silver Linings Playbook now to be deemed Oscar-ready.  Maybe we could fit that into the program this week.

Drive safely, we’ll see you tomorrow.  A couple of shots of last night’s sunset attached. Cheers, Pete
