De-Nesting Diaries: Tuesday, May 7th

They are ill discoverers that think there is no land, when they can see nothing but sea. -Francis Bacon, essayist, philosopher, and statesman (1561-1626)

Great, see you there, G
Thanks so much Patrick! Lovely to see you, Corrine and Chloe! Appreciate the photos, cheers colin
July 9th around 6:00 for wee visit our place? Noreen gets in at 3:15. Cheers Colin

Hi Colin!

Glad you enjoyed snaps! Thanks for invitation to visit with Noreen. Have put date on calendar!! Day before we leave for London so a very good reason to be packed by then! Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

I may need to go to Specsavers but couldn't see pic of the birthday boy. Off to theatre soon - passion play with zoe wannamaker. Had tea with New man on roof terrace of ashmolean in Oxford yesterday and remembered last visit with you both x

Hi again, Duhlink!

Zoe Wanamaker! My, aren't you lucky. Cora Lee and I saw her in 2010 with David Suchet in Arthur Miller's All My Sons, you might recall. Wish we could have spent more time in Oxford, in general, and at Ashmolean, in particular. Fab outing indeed. How did New Man fancy tea on roof terrace?

Just returned from the reception for the awarding of the Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book on British Columbia. Basil, former UBC Librarian, was a friend from the '70's when we met while I was at Library School. Winner of this inaugural prize, (Basil died a year ago.), was Derek Hayes. Bought a copy of his simply wonderful British Columbia: A New Historical Atlas. Quite a lovely occasion/event and had a chance to visit with many former colleagues and faculty friends

Basil's eldest daughter, Megan, became a good friend of Chloƫ's nanny, Margareta, now back in Denmark. (She visited with us in Stockholm, in 2010, when we were there, after leaving London.) We chatted with Megan at the reception and she asked me to pass along regards to Margareta since we remain in semi-regular contact. We've invited Maggie to come to Cornwall and/or Languedoc as well. You haven't mentioned whether you yourself have had any thoughts about visiting us in either England or France, or both. We'd be delighted if you could/would join us. Let me know your thoughts and we'll plan accordingly.

Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio! PS: Birthday Boy is chap with hat, standing between Cora Lee and Maya

Hallo Patrick, nice to hear you again! I will arrive at the 8. of July. Maybe we can see us at the next day. Probably you have to arrange a lot for your trip.  Nevertheless we can meet at least for a coffee.

You do it right! You´re always active and travel a lot. I would like to do trips like you or Bob. Unfortunately I have to work a lot. But this year I want to spent more time with travelling. So we went for 1 week to Egypt  I´m also very  happy to come to Vancouver for at least 9 days.

Are you still in contact with Henning. Bob told me, that he has no contact anymore. How is Ayn?

Monica lives in Greece. She has a 19 years old son. My Mum lives also in Greece.  I go every year to Italy. My wife´s family comes from Buccino, near Salerno. My sons are 8 and 12 years old. They love to play soccer. The pictures are taken in Egypt. Best wishes from the whole family! Olli

Hi again, Olivetti!

Since we don't leave until July 10th, do hope we will be able to have a visit, however brief, on July 9th. Perhaps you could call us once you are settled, after you arrive, and we can arrange something. If convenient for you, perhaps at our place. Are you coming alone or with your wife and boys? Are you staying with Bob?

We are still in touch with Henning but infrequently so, I'm sorry to say. He does visit Vancouver, once or sometimes twice a year, but seems so busy when here that last time we didn't see him except for a few minutes when he dropped off some wonderful frozen meat from one of his latest hunting trips. He is always very generous with his wild game and we certainly enjoy it immensely. We don't see Laura much either even though she lives in Vancouver. She is in the film industry and she seems to be working round the clock on a shoot and then traveling when the picture is finished.

Must be lovely countryside around Buccino. Would love to visit. Was last in Naples in 1970, Egypt in 1952! Pictures from there were terrific. We knew that Monica lives in Greece as Cora Lee has had a few messages from her. Does your Mother live near her and her son? Do your boys play for Germany or Italy?

Had a couple of good rides, yesterday and today. On Monday I went did the Stanley Park/Prospect Point Hill Loop (10 K to SP from our place, 10 K for each loop, plus some extra dipsy-doodles to add a few extra K), five times for a grand total of 77.3 K over 3:42:09, AVG 21.0 KPH, MAX 53.1 KPH, so was very pleased with the AVG, highest since my accidento. Today I met Whirlygig and Robo Man at 25th and Maple and we rode out to Iona. On return I left them at Pine and 37th and made my way out to UBC where I followed much the same route as I intended to take on the day of my accident. Came home with 85.3 K over 4:26:29, AVG 19.2 KPH, MAX 54.8 KPH. Disappointed by AVG but blame it on my fellow riders for slowing me down!

Best wishes and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Bob!

Cora Lee is more than delighted to join us but may not be able to do so, given what volunteer shift she might be assigned on Election Day. Will let you know as soon as she finds out what her assignment is to be.

Haven't seen Genevieve Bujold in years, probably since the late '70's or mid-eighties I should think, either in Journey or Kamouraska, I think. Didn't realize that she was still making films. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi again, Ann!

Our flight from LA doesn't land until 7:10pm, in Bellingham, on May 22nd, so won't be able to make reception, let alone Incite event. Have a grand time. I'm sure you will. Thanks anyway. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Giggster!

I called about 9:40pm but guess you were already in the land of Nod! How was squash after ride? Ted can play tomorrow evening BUT Sarge is in Chilliwack on a training course all week so he is out. Do you want me to ask Ragin' or would Kerry like to play?

Attended the reception for the awarding of the Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book on British Columbia this afternoon. Winner of the inaugural prize was Derek Hayes. Bought a copy of his simply wonderful British Columbia: A New Historical Atlas. Quite a lovely occasion/event and had a chance to visit with many former colleagues and faculty friends. Alan Twigg was there and he gave a short overview of Basil's contributions to publishing in BC, etc. His deliveries are always enjoyable to hear.

Part of the Danish/Swedish masseuse contingent. She is a doctor so she'll be invaluable for hangovers and dizzy spells!

Thanks for grand jaunt today. Not sure what you might have in mind for tomorrow so give me a call in the morning. Do you know if Raymond wishes to ride? Cheers, Patrizzio!

Met Stompin' Tom and Big Al at Mahony & Sons Public House at UBC on University Blvd at 2:30pm. Enjoyed a draft Guinness and we chatted on the patio for an hour or so, (Big Al regaled us with some of his fishing stories.), before strolling over to The Ike Barber Learning Centre to attend the Inaugural Basil Stuart-Stubbs Price Reception in the Dodson Room, funnily enough, once my ILL office. Cora Lee met me there as she had been downtown doing more volunteer work for the NDP on Matt Toner's campaign.

During the Great Depression preceding the passage of the Social Security Act, "soup kitchens" provided the only meals some unemployed Americans had. This particular soup kitchen was sponsored by the Chicago gangster Al Capone.

Saw quite a few former library colleagues and a number of faculty members, now retired, I'd known from ILL days, as well, so it was a lovely affair all around. The food was simply astonishing and I didn't need to have dinner by the time I was finished. Wines, both white and red, were more than acceptable so I was a tad disappointed when servers began to clear-up! Brenda Peterson, Basil's widow, seems to be bearing up reasonably well. She is still working in HSS in the Library. Had a chance to visit with her as I'd not but said hello at Basil's memorial service last year.
